This week the World Cup has moved on to Kvitfjell. Feels good to be back home. The hill is in an excellent shape, everything is all set for a great event. The training run today went ok, and with some more attacking spirit at the raceday, I think it should be possible to make some top 30 results.
Today we
competed in Super-Combined. This is a day a have been looking forward to for a
long time! Preparations have been good, and I was super psyched to get out
there, aiming for the top.
The weather
cleared up today, and we finally got to do the Olympic downhill race. The
volunteers have done an amazing job with the slope the last days, and we skied
a fair and worthy competition. I finished 31th , 2,38 out and was actually
pretty happy with my performance. It´s a nice feeling to finally ski without
knee pain, and to only focus on finding more speed.
The weather
has as expected given us some problems these last days. Both yesterdays
downhill training, and today´s race was cancelled. Since our program has been
postponed, we got the chance to go watch the opening ceremony in Vancouver last
night. It was an experience of a lifetime to see the show, and to match with
fellow Norwegian Olympians. Although it was a lot of travelling and waiting
around to get there, it fueled me with the true Olympic spirit. Which was made
it all worth the effort.
Today it was time for the first training run of the Olympic downhill.
Some wet and dark clouds came in over the mountain, and I ended up waiting 5
hours at the start before the training was cancelled.
We have had
a week of great training in Nakiska. The weather and snow has been absolutely
amazing, and I have got to practice all four disciplines. My skiing has been
improving every day, which is very motivating.
It´s
finally here, every athletes wet dream, -the Olympics. Our team has done well
this season, and the Norwegian Olympic Committee drafted
all our five World Cup athletes for the games in Vancouver. That is a big
achievement for us!
Yesterdays
race did not really turn out
the way I planned. I hooked a gate in the second run, and did not finish. In
slalom we clear every gate by about 2-10cm, sooner or later you miscalculate
and carve your ski on the wrong side. It´s part of the game.. Even though I know this,
it sucks!
In my opinion is the World Cup race in Schladming, the coolest slalom race on the planet. The arena fits about 50 000 people, and every year it´s full! The atmosphere is breathtaking, and it´s simply a great great experience to get to take a part of it. This race is tomorrow at 18.00 houers, watch it!
The weekend in Kitzbuhel is over. It has been a great event, beautiful weather, lots of people and perfect conditions. I only raced the slalom, witch did not turn out the way I hoped....
French skier Jannnick Bertrand had some problems in the Kernen-S at the
Lauberhorn race in Wengen last weekend. Normally I don´t like to post
videos containing crashes, but this one hilarius and has a good
outcome. Enjoy!
My slalom shape has been pretty solid lately, today I had another good
day at work! After skiing two good runs in the Wengen slalom I ended up
in 11th position.
After Adelboden the tour moved on to Wengen. This is one of the
greatest events of the season, during the weekend they are expecting about 100 000 spectatiors in the hill! The Lauberhorn downhill is also the longest
in the circus with alenght of 4,5km and a runtime of over 2,30sek. Yesterday we
raced the Super-Combined competition.
Today we raced in Adelboden, Switzerland. I was lying in a 10th position after the first run, and ended 12th when the race was done. After the disappointing result in Zagreb on Wednesday, I am more then happy with the result today.
Yesterdays race did not go quite as planned, I skied a terrible first run, ended up in 31st position and did not qualify for the second run. Skiing has really felt good lately, this makes yesterdays result even more painful. Anyway, I think I learned a lesson, and are looking forward to doing a better job in Adelboden Sunday.
January 2nd we flew down to Munich, Germany. From there we continued south by car to Kreuzbergpass in Italy. We have had two beautiful and high quality training days in the Dolomite mountains.
After over five weeks on the road it´s finally time to head home. Since
we left for Canada in November I have visited 9 countries, experienced
temperatures from 30c° below to 35c° positive, spent countless hours
travelling, and probably skied close to 10 000 gates. There has bin up
and downs, and today I´m taking a well needed Christmas break.
The period after the crash in Beaver almost
two weeks ago has bin tough. First of all you get a punch in the face
mentally. To “get over it” often takes more time then you want and
expect. It feels like you are skiing with a devil on your shoulder,
telling you –“you can´t do it!” Right now I´m struggling to fight back
, show him that I can and to get rid of him…
Today we competed in Super- Combined in Val d`Isere, France. First we raced a
Super-G run, followed by a slalom run. I was skiing terrible and had
one of my worst days in a long time..
After the Super-Combi race in Beaver Creek friday, I was exhausted, had pain everywhere and was not fit for more racing the rest of the weekend. Aksel visited Miami on his way to Lake Louise a couple of weeks ago, and recommended me doing the same on my way back to Europe. Long story short I flew from Denver to Miami on Saturday morning, and have had three wonderful days in the sun. From minus 25C i Colorado to pluss 30C in Florida is definitely healing for both body and soul.
With a light sunburn and a smile on my face, I´m haeding back to reality in the mountains of Val d`Isere, France tomorrow.
Getting out of bed today, I felt like shit. I was stiff and soar from
neck to toe. The knee was also pretty painful and I was limping like a
drunken seaman… I was not feeling ready to race in any way. I figured
some fresh air would do me good, and went to the inspection with the
other guys. As I put on my skies and going down the hill, it felt a lot
better then expected. After doing some slalom runs in the warm up
course, I decided to race.
Today was the last training run before the Super- Combined competition
tomorrow. I hade a good run yesterday, and was feeling confident before the
training. The temperature was awfully cold (minus 20-25C), but the sky was
blue, snow was hard/icy and the downhill track was as good as I ever
have seen it.
This week we are in Beaver Creek, Colorado. We will have three races in the weekend, a Super-Combind, a Downhill and a Giantslalom. Conditions look awesome, the "Birds Of Pray" slope is in a great shape. I will try to update with some new photos during the week.
The races in Lake Louise is history, and we are already in Calgary,
waiting for our flight to Denver tomorrow morning. The weekend did not
end up the way I was hoping to. I’m leaving without any World Cup points in the bag.
Today the weather was back on our side, and we got to do another training run in the Lake Louise downhill track. I had a nice clean run without any mistakes, and finished in 16th
position. This is for me a great result, and a sign that the equipment
on technique is good enough to fight for some speed results as well
this season.
We have had a great week of training in Nakiska. Both the weather and the snow has been on our side! Here are some photos showing you what we have been up to.
